Between the departure of the Romans in AD 410 and the Norman Conquest in 1066, a series of invasions by Germanic and Scandinavian peoples laid the building blocks for the creation of the English nation. Taking their name from two of the most important groups of invaders, the Anglo-Saxons developed their own national identity with a distinct culture, legal system, and language. Despite the Norman invasion - and the many waves of immigration during subsequent centuries - life in modern Britain owes much to the Anglo-Saxon heritage. ~@Cultured warriors@
The Anglo-Saxons were capable sailors and fierce warriors. The ship burial found at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk also revealed their artistic abilities, with much evidence of finely wrought jewellery and metalwork, such as this helmet. Although they lacked the sophistication typical of Roman civilization, the Anglo-Saxons had their own colourful and vibrant culture.
